“Many are holding: mercurybodies” is a fictional planetary assembly, which hosts human, non-human and fictive bodies like mercurybodies, waterbodies, golden bodies. The members of the assembly, artists, collectives situated remote on diverse positions on the planet shall develop aesthetic, performative forms and materialities of responding to the continuing grabbing of land and the exploitations of material, intellectual and spiritual resources at Rio Atrato in Afro-Colombia.
“Imagine mercury molecules contaminating the illegal gold mining sites at the Colombian Rio Atrato being present planetary: in the apparently clear water reservoirs of Switzerland, in German coal-fired power plants, in the brains of belugas whales passing through the oceans, in your daily used batteries, or in the awakening Arctic permafrost. These are the same mercury molecules that international traders had delivered for 30 years long via dubious supply chains deep into the Colombian rainforest.
Mercury molecules contaminate and vulnerate. The poisoned river Atrato can hardly fulfill anymore it’s local mission as a food donor, as a means of transport, as a spiritual soul – protecting biodiversity, health and the sociocultural fabric. The contamination of Rio Atrato is manifold and dispersed. It does not only occur in the proximity of the physical flow. Mercury molecules diffuse, travel with the wind flow, as rain drops, become mediated as data or affect bodies with concern.
The fictional assembly on mercurybodies is a constellation of exchange, sharing of artists and art collectives in Quibdó, the feminist collective Fundación Mareia, in Bogotá, the Arts Collaboratory organization Más Arte Más Acción and knowbotiq – a study. Putting different artistic and art educative practices side as side, this fictional assembly is not aiming yet at a form of linear collaboration. It tends to embody various, remote situated, earthbound experiments with imaginations of fictive mercurybodies, with concepts of cosmopolitical (I. Stengers) encounters and the sharing of divergent knowledges.
Remote Evocations
A space of resonance and remote encounters in relation to affections for the with Mercury polluted Rio Atrato in Afro-Colombia.. Poems, texts, fragments of interviews, conversations, compositions, music and memories are being intertwined by fiction and afro-utopian perspectives, which invite to immerse into these sonic evocations.
